OPINION / The Sheriff of Nottingham: Breaking the Entitlement Culture on the BOCS: It Will Start With Change

The Sheriff of Nottingham in Prince William County
Supervisor Wally Covington is a low-key and, by his own estimation, a hard-working Prince William County Supervisor.
Wally Covington is, in the estimation of independent pundits in the County, the poster-boy for the “Entitlement Culture” on the BOCS.
Those infected by this “Entitlement Culture” on the BOCS can be diagnosed by the following symptoms:
- I will have this job as Supervisor as long as I want it regardless of what I do or don’t do.
- The County owes me the perks of office and has to quit whittling away my ability to push money to those who support me.
- My length of service on the Board is more important than what I have accomplished.
- I have no obligation to interfere with the County Executive and her budget or management of the County.
- Developers are a necessary evil in the County and I have to work with them if I want to have any chance of raising money to get re-elected.
There is only one cure for this “Entitlement Culture” bug.
Removal from office.
The cure for this pervasive malady in the Brentsville District: Jeanine Lawson.
The Sheriff receives daily emails from Birdies across the County talking about the problems created by and misdeeds of their Supervisor.
Yet, The Sheriff would bet that each Supervisor would give themselves a top grade for their work and accomplishments.
No Barack “Incomplete” Obama’s in this crowd. Certainly not with Wally Covington.
Wally has not been a big player in giving contributions to the likes of little league teams involving lads and lassies. No, Wally favors the big-ticket items like spending taxpayer money on expensive productions at the Hylton Center for the Performing Arts.
And let’s not forget his penchant for unloading barrels of taxpayer money to his highly favored charity, the Rainbow Riding Center. Truth be told, it wasn’t just money either. It was County land. As in millions of dollars in County land.
But somewhere in the culture of the BOCS, it is just about doing business as usual. As stewards of the taxpayer money, you steward. Any way you damned well please, thank you.
And the commoners should be grateful for all the sacrifice these public servants dole out for us. Oops, The Sheriff got a bit confused. It was all the taxpayer money they dole out to their friends and families.
The entitlement extends to the likes of Marty “Maytag” Nohe that sees absolutely nothing wrong with serving on the Board of Directors of the Boys & Girls Clubs, not attending any meetings of that Board, and then feigning offense when someone points out that may be a conflict of interest.
How, claims Marty and his most agitated wife, can anyone think that is a bad thing. Volunteering and all of that.
Marty says he just figures they keep him on the Board, despite his failure to attend meetings, because they see “VALUE” to his being on that Board.
It could not possibly be that the Boys & Girls Club keeps Marty on the Board because he is helping to pour hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars into their bank account.
Nope, that couldn’t be the reason.
It is about being entitled.
It is also about 2015 when the taxpayers can rid themselves of this blight.
In the Brentsville District, it will be about putting Jeanine Lawson in office that she should have won in 2011.
